Welcome Back #TeamHaringey6 – A Flying Start to the Half Term!

Welcome back #TeamHaringey6! We hope you had a restful and refreshing half-term break and found time to reflect, reset and revamp for the exciting weeks ahead. As always at Haringey Sixth Form College, we’ve returned at full speed — and what an incredible start it has been!

During the February half term, we proudly launched the first of this year’s Turing Scheme overseas placements, with a group of learners travelling to Portugal for a three-week international work experience placement.

This exciting opportunity enables students to:

  • Gain valuable international work experience
  • Develop professional skills and confidence
  • Strengthen communication and independence
  • Immerse themselves in a new culture

Alongside their placements, students have enjoyed Portugal’s stunning scenery and experienced daily life in a different country — significantly broadening their horizons both personally and professionally and building valuable cultural capital.

And this is just the beginning! This week, we also saw students jet off to Greece and Tanzania as part of our expanding overseas programme. We are incredibly proud of how our learners are representing the college internationally, demonstrating maturity, resilience and ambition on a global stage.

In celebration of National Careers Week, we hosted a vibrant Careers Fair, welcoming universities, employers and post-18 providers to support students in planning their next steps. Learners had the opportunity to explore higher education routes, apprenticeships and employment pathways — empowering them to make informed decisions about their futures beyond #H6.

Our Level 3 Year 1 Applied Science students also attended the STEM Careers Fest at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they engaged with industry professionals and explored real-world STEM career pathways. Experiences like this strengthen curriculum intent by connecting classroom learning to future employment opportunities and raising students’ aspirations.

As part of our Level 2 enrichment programme, we were delighted to welcome Fatma, an Employment and Skills Advisor from Haringey London Borough Council.

Fatma delivered an insightful session focused on local employment opportunities, skills development and pathways into work. Students gained valuable knowledge about:

  • The support available to young people within the borough

  • How to access training and apprenticeships

  • Building employability skills and confidence

  • Navigating the local labour market

This session formed part of our wider commitment to ensuring that every learner is well-prepared for their next steps. By connecting students directly with local authority expertise, we continue to enhance cultural capital and provide meaningful, real-world insight that strengthens progression outcomes.

Our #TeamHaringey6 Level 1 and Level 3 Year 2 Public Services students visited the Royal Air Force Museum London to explore post-college career pathways and understand the armed forces’ involvement in global affairs.

This visit directly supported curriculum learning:

  • Level 1 students are completing their Finding Out About Public Services unit, where they examine the role of services and how they meet public needs.
  • Level 3 Year 2 students are studying global affairs and will be presenting on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions abroad.

Students explored a wide range of aircraft, helicopters and military vehicles used during RAF missions and learned about the diversity of roles available — including dog handling, catering, engineering and paramedic services. The visit enriched subject knowledge, strengthened literacy through research and presentation preparation, and deepened understanding of global citizenship.

Beyond academics, the day provided valuable opportunities for teamwork and personal growth. Our Level 3 Year 2 students acted as role models, actively supporting and monitoring Level 1 students’ behaviour, demonstrating excellent leadership skills and reinforcing our positive learning culture. Staff members Sam, Thomas and Magda also counted the experience towards their CPD, reflecting our commitment to continuous professional development.

We were delighted to welcome PC Sim, who delivered an engaging and informative assembly on Hate Crime Awareness and How to Report a Crime Online.

Students participated in interactive true-or-false activities to challenge misconceptions and deepen their understanding. Key themes included:

  • What hate crime is and its impact on individuals and communities
  • Protected characteristics under the law (including age, gender, disability, religion or belief, and race)
  • Online hate crime and trolling
  • How to report incidents and access support

Students were clearly signposted to trusted reporting systems and support services, empowering them to take responsibility as active citizens.

Following the assembly, PC Sim visited Learning for Life classes, where students engaged in meaningful discussions, asked thoughtful questions and learned more about his role. It was fantastic to see such high levels of engagement, maturity and curiosity — a true reflection of the respectful and inclusive culture we continue to foster at H6.
