English Language & Literature is an exciting course for avid readers and writers, where you get to explore your own writing as well as others’ works.

What will I study?

  • A wide range of texts, including spoken word and written non- fiction, literature and drama, focusing on the way readers and speakers make sense of language.
  • Novels like Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ and the poems of Christina Rossetti.
  • Modern writing in the Voices in Speech and Writing unit:an anthology of nonfiction texts such as newspaper articles, speeches, interviews and more.
  • • Skills to improve your own writing in the creative writing coursework unit.

  • You gain work experience in publishing and journalism.
  • You have ‘College Talks’ from university lecturers and experts in English.
  • You go on residential trips to Transylvania on the ‘Trail of Dracula’
  • You go on trips around London, including museums and theatres.
  • You attend creative writing workshops with working writers in multiple fields

How will I be assessed?

The first year of the A-Level is assessed through:

  • Two written examinations (50% each)

The second year of the A-Level course is assessed through:

  • Two written examinations (40% each)
  • One piece of coursework (20%)

Your teacher will provide on-going feedback throughout the duration of the course.

Entry requirements

Five or more GCSE grades 9-5, including a minimum grade 6 in English Literature or English Language.
