Where are they now (Class of 2021)

Last season alone has seen four of our players successfully earn scholarships to schools abroad where they will continue to develop as a student athlete:

Alex Distras (2019/20 season averages: 31ppg, 5apg)- Scotland Campus commit USA

Since first joining Haringey Hawks at the young age of 6 years old, Alex Distras has now completed his career at Haringey and is progressing to the next level, where he will be flying out to the States to join top 5 national ranked Scotland Campus Prep, in Pennsylvania.

Alex has come a long way from playing for the u14 Hawks at the age of 9, to now being one of the top point guards in the country and a National team select player for GB. This past season Alex has achieved many basketball accolades, including EYBL leading scorer (28.4ppg and back to back 40+ point games), ABL 2nd leading scorer (31.7ppg) & National Cup MVP. This has been a result of years of hard work and staying committed to his craft.

On the court Alex is a threat as soon as the ball is in his hands. He has great all round game and demonstrates this consistently with elite ball handling, three point range and the ability to attack the rim finishing in a variety of ways around taller players. He also has great basketball IQ and knows when and where to find his teammates for the best scoring opportunities. We are so happy to see him earning the scholarship he deserves and we know that his new team are going to enjoy having him. Scotland Campus are renowned for producing NCAA division 1 caliber players, putting Alex has reached his goals of landing a spot at a US college.

Ndewedo Newbury (2019/20 season averages: 23ppg, 5.3apg)- Loomis Chaffee commit USA

From the start of the u18 season, Ndewedo has been a key part of Haringey’s success. Being the top 3 on the team in points, rebounds and assists. At 6’8, Newbury is able to use his length to his advantage in many situations, making him not only a great rebounder and shot blocker, but also a great finisher too. Although usually scoring from inside the paint, Ndewedo’s jump shot is also strong and constantly improving. In the EYBL tournament in Italy, Ndewedo was named group C stage tournament MVP twice as he lead his team to an undefeated tournament.

Ndewedo is also extremely successful in the classroom, and takes academics just as serious as his basketball. Achieving top grades in all his subjects and also scoring high in the SAT, he has already shown top academic US colleges that he is a great example of a student athlete.

Despite only playing competitive basketball for less that 5 years, Ndewedo has already shown his game is at an elite level: competing for England u17’s last summer and also being ranked 7th on the Deng Camp Top 50 list in the UK. This success has lead to him earning a full scholarship at Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut, USA. Having already received NCAA Division 1 interest, we are excited to see Ndewedo’s career progress in the near future.

Owen Young (2019/20 season averages: 22ppg, 5spg)- Selfoss Karfa Academy commit ICELAND

Owen has developed tremendously throughout his time at Haringey, not just physically, but mentally as a leader for his teammates too. He always shows up, never makes excuses, and always plays hard no matter what. He has maintained success both in the classroom and on the court all year round, showing what a student athlete is all about. Last year, he was awarded the bronze award for the BTEC student of the year. 3rd best BTEC Sport Student in the country. An amazing achievement.

Although known as a knock down shooter, Owen is a great 2-way player for any team he is on. On offence he can score the ball in a variety of ways, knocking down threes and playing through contact to get to the basket, on defence he is a pest to play against and very physical. Finishing last season with an average of 22 ppg, .and 5 spg just shows how affective he is on the floor. Owen has a few options but decided to go via the European route. He will be joining Selfoss Basketball Academy in Iceland. This a great opportunity as past players have been able to receive scholarships to America or turned Pro. We look forward to continue to watch him grow and develop.

Charles Harding (2019/20 season averages: 20ppg, 4spg)- KEBA Prep commit USA

Throughout Charles’ time at Haringey, he has been one of the main players on the team. Particularly for his stand out defensive play and speed and quickness on both ends of the floor. He is a selfless player and always puts the teams winning before any individual glory, doing whatever it takes to contribute to win.

Charles has shown the ability to learn fast and develop his game each day. Last season saw Charles put up great numbers, not only did he average 17ppg but he also added 4spg last season. This performance caught the eye of KEBA Prep head coach who offered Charles a place on their 2020/2021 season roster. We know KEBA Prep will have a great two way player with the addition of Charles. His style of play is perfect for the fast pace of US basketball.
