Humanities department visit the Houses of Parliament

Last Friday, 30th September, the Humanities department visited the Houses of Parliament in Westminster with the AS Law, History and Government & Politics classes.

All of the groups had a behind-the-scenes tour of the home of parliamentary democracy, and had the chance to follow in the Queen’s footsteps, tracing the steps she takes at the state opening of Parliament. The students were also able to stand in the benches of the House of Commons and House of Lords, where Lords and MPs have sat and made the decisions which have taken us to war, created the NHS, ended slavery in the British Empire, and gave birth to the education system that exists today.

The Politics and History students also took part in a workshop exploring the techniques used in parliamentary debates, and then got a chance to quiz a member of local MP David Lammy’s team on the work and responsibilities of a Member of Parliament, and some of the weird and wonderful letters he has received from his constituents.
