Special Guest John Roberts from AO.com
On Tuesday 5th February, our BTEC Business and ICT students were invited to attend a very special presentation from John Roberts, Co-founder of AO.com, a £600M company with Q&A session for our students.
This presentation was organised by The UNLOC Enterprise Academy, a professional the academy that work in partnership with Haringey Sixth form College have to deliver a unique programme to inspire, motivate and develop the enterprising mindsets of young people. At the moment our Business and ICT students are participating in this programme.
Haringey Sixth form College and UNLOC passionately believe in enabling young people to develop their own skills by setting up and testing their own businesses, projects, and ideas. Personal development is at the heart of everything UNLOC does and this programme embodies that ethos and fits hand in glove with our college values.
In the presentation, the students learned about what it took to make AO.com such a successful company. The students then had the opportunity to ask Mr. Roberts questions such as “how much money did it take to start up your company?”, “how will Brexit effect AO.com?” and “how did AO.com get its name?”. One student also asked if they have any vacancies!!
John Roberts said "it was a pleasure to share the AO.com journey. What a great bunch and some great questions. I hope it was useful for them and if only one of them thinks differently as a result then it’s worth it!"
Russ Lawrance, Principal said, “I am so excited that our students had such an amazing opportunity to learn from such an experienced businessman, I also personally and professionally found it so inspiring, John was blunt and honest and he told our students not just the pros and cons for starting up their own business, but also what it takes and why his company is so successful For me it was great to hear about his investment plans for the business – he generated a great enthusiasm which will help at least one of our students hopefully even more to become entrepreneurs of the future!”
One of our students said “It was really inspiring to hear from a guy that's so successful and his experiences of starting from the bottom and getting to where he is now. That will be me in few years time!"
