BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND BEYOND Dig Deeper, Look Closer, Think Bigger!
October is the month of Black History and sees the start of our year-long commemoration, celebration of Black Past, Present and Future. Students will be looking at Racism in History throughout the year in their Professional and Personal Development sessions, as well as having an opportunity to participate in a whole range of interesting and exciting activities to engage their minds and enrich their experience of our fantastic college.
Lisa Westray, Principal says “it is important that Haringey Sixth Form College students know the importance of Black History especially as we have students from all backgrounds and we encourage and facilitate open and constructive dialogue about what it means to be Black in the context of our college, our community, in the UK and the rest of the world.”
At Haringey Sixth Form College we have an array of exciting activities taking place this month as part of #BlackHistoryMonth.
Our Haringey 6 Student Union have been highlighting via our instagram @studentunionh6 the many black people that have made an impact to our society; they are also planning to collaborate with the media team to make a video.
The Criminology, Psychology & Law campaign for this year have also decided to focus solely around the British political Windrush scandal concerning people who were wrongly detained, denied legal rights, threatened with deportation, (at least 83 cases, wrongly deported from the UK by the Home Office). A riveting and exciting campaign!
As we celebrate the diverse richness of our student body; Toby Chef Lecturer in for Level 1 and 2 Professional Cookery is working on the prominence of Black chefs in the industry and students will be trying their hands at some African and Caribbean cuisine.
Our students from Health and Social Care have asked for some dishes to be made available in the Colleges eatery, The Hart and The Hive. They have also been learning about prominent Black figures from the health care industry.
