A-Level Fine Art Visual research trip to Brick Lane and the Whitechapel Gallery
For their first thematic project of ‘life & decay’ students were set the task to observe, explore & record everyday life, places, objects and imagery in a circular walk from busy Liverpool St Station to the Whitechapel Art Gallery and back round along Brick Lane.
Equipped with SLR cameras students turned their lens to their surroundings, alongside the interesting textures, street art and shop fronts there was friendly interaction with students and people in the area, obliging police officers and workmen posed, chatted and seemed happy to become subject matter.
An unusual opportunity presented itself, an invitation to photograph a ‘live’ protest about low pay levels in the service industry in the foyer of a large office block – Students Buffy & Jessika got stuck in and took some great shots!
Dutch artists Elmgreen & Dragset surprised students at the Whitechapel gallery, with a challenging installation whose message was both political and personal, certainly thought provoking and sometimes baffling!
It was a successful day, a lot of walking, a lot of photography and some great primary photos to develop new themes and artwork from.
