Principal's Blog

July & August 2019 -

As I write this blog we are approaching the end of the college year. This is an exciting time for students and staff, many looking forward to some time off which isn't a surprise!

But for me, I look at this time of year as the time to celebrate the great efforts and achievements of all! And boy, if you are a regular reader, follower or just go through the news on the website you will know how much we have had to celebrate this year at Haringey Sixth Form College.

I won’t repeat all the accolades here but if you are not aware, then where have you been and why are you not aware? So, look at all the information on the website and follow our social media feeds. There are some amazing achievements and accolades.

For me though, this time of year is also about turning the page and starting over again.

My job is never over and I often have conversations with colleagues. I am often asked for advice on this and I would say that a good Principal/CEO will always use the end of the college year to search for and make improvements for the upcoming college year which will benefit all the staff and students.

I have been working hard with our Board of Trustees and Senior Staff, Lisa and Jacqui in particular, supported by a wider Extended Leadership Group of staff, to do a comprehensive reflection on the entire college year as a whole.

We have looked at our Strategic Plan and looked for things that worked really well, things that did not work at all, and things we can improve on.

The truth is that year in, year out there is always room for continued improvement.

So what does that mean?

Well, I am not going to give you some examples of what we might do come September but what we are actually going to do. No excuses, these things will happen!

We will have excellent teachers in every classroom which is essential to maximize student potential. We are not afraid to challenge and support teachers in areas that need improvement. I want to stretch all our staff, I never want a complacent teacher, or indeed any member of #TeamHaringey6. It is equally important to praise each teacher and professionals staff members for their hard work. It wouldn't be impossible for Haringey Sixth Form College to be as effective as it is without each person pulling their weight.

We don’t just tinker here, we will make big decisions and changes. For example, the college estate improvements have already started; this is much more than looking at what might need repairing, or a want list (in case we somehow come up with some extra funds). We manage our money well and reinvest in the students, the building and the staff every year.

We are refurbishing and reconfiguring the whole college campus; new classrooms, a new fitness suite, a new state of the art lecture theatre, new refectory and a new coffee bar. This is building on the developments from last year, namely the Innovation Centre, The Crib (student common room) and H6@Connected. We are investing in IT and our overall digital platform, having constant dialogue with the likes of Amazon. We are investing in the enrichment offer with the appointment of a #H6Experience Coordinator and Sports Development Officer.

As soon as our students and teachers are gone from the building we are putting all of our efforts into preparing the site for the upcoming college year. This is led by John Mansfield, our amazing Assistant Director of Campus and Estates, backed up by a strong site and IT team alongside an amazing set of contractors such as Rap Interiors, Innovate & Thornwood Interiors.

There will be regular progress updates, especially via our twitter feed.

Why are we doing all of this? Simply because we said we would. We deliver simply an Outstanding Learner Experience for our students and we want to be the employer of choice for staff. That is not an ambition, it is an expectation at Haringey Sixth Form College. We know it is already working as we are the fastest growing college certainly in London, if not nationally. For example, in three years we have doubled our learner numbers, the #H6Experience is unique and #H6 is so much more than just exams and results.

This is the college of the future, right here, right now, built for young people with what young people need to become great human beings and great contributions to society.

If you require any information or details about for example enrolment, start of term and for any interviews for late applicants this information can be found on this website.

With everything you see, read and hear about us, my question is not 'Why would you choose to come to and study here?' But given all we do for our fantastic students, how much we love them and they love us and the building is fantastic, the real question is 'Why wouldn’t you come here?'

So just to say a massive thanks for taking the time to read my blog. I hope you all have a great summer and as ever, if you have any questions use the contact information on the website to get in touch.

As we build on the #H6Experience, remember #WeAreOrange #OrangeArmy

Kind regards,

Russ
