We Move Club of the Year
Haringey Sixth Form Colleges Dance and Basketball Enrichment Clubs were invited to enter by our partners at Haringey Council to get involved with the Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards 2016.
We are so proud to announce WeMove was shortlisted for 3 categories: Junior Volunteer of the Year (Levi Ezekiel and Janai Wilson), Coach of the Year (Fumy Opeyemi) and Club of the Year. WeMove won Club of the Year, beating Tottenham Hotspurs Ladies Football Club!
WeMove was shortlisted for how it showcases the talents and creativity of young women in physical activity, how it promotes leadership and community in young people, and for its collaborations with professional dance companies and schools across the borough.
Our Basketball Academy were nominated for the Team of the Year Award. The nomination for the Team of the Year was a great reflection on the work Haringey Sixth Form Basketball Academy team has done over the past year.
Training consistently has over 30 students in attendance and is a vibrant hub of sporting and social creativity. Within training, students take on leadership roles and help the weaker players develop, whilst outside of training team members are ambassadors for the academy and regularly promote basketball around the college and local community through drop-in sessions and offering taster sessions for local secondary pupils. These inspiring actions have helped to develop a culture of basketball in the college that is both welcoming and inclusive, but also a celebration of elite sports performance.
The Haringey Sixth Form Basketball Academy had its most successful year in 2015-16 since it was developed. The academy won the U19 National Schools Competition and the Community Basketball League. Despite these accolades at elite level, the academy continues to welcome students to basketball and develop talent amongst the players to ensure that every participant has the opportunity to progress in the sport. The academy has now developed a girls team who will be competing very soon and hoping to replicate the success of the boys team.
